Calvin Johnson, a resident of Three Rivers for 53 years, passed away Monday, May 28, 2018, in Visalia, Calif. He was 86.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 23, at 10:30 a.m., at First Baptist Church of Three Rivers.
Cal was born September 15, 1931, in Barnwell, Alberta, Canada, to James Johnson and Edna Anderson. He moved to the United States when he was 18 and joined the U.S. Army where he served as a helicopter technician.
Cal met the love of his life, Jill Everhardy, in Lake Arrowhead, Calif. They married in 1959 at Wayfarers Chapel in Rancho Palos Verdes. Cal was a loving and caring husband who always mentioned how lucky he was to have such a wonderful wife.
Cal owned an interior decorating company in Los Angeles. In 1965, when the family packed up and moved to Three Rivers, Cal continued his decorating business for many years, commuting between Three Rivers and Los Angeles.
In the 1970s, Cal became a real estate agent and later a broker. He continued this career for the remainder of his life. In the 1980s, he and his family owned and operated Silver Spur Liquor in Three Rivers.
Cal loved the community of Three Rivers and quickly became involved in the Three Rivers Chamber of Commerce where he served one year as president. For many years, Cal was an EMT for the Three Rivers Volunteer Ambulance Service.
For more than 40 years, Cal was a member of the Three Rivers Lion Club and served as president twice. He felt privileged to be part of the Lions Club and believed in the foundation of what the club stands for and the assistance they provide to the Three Rivers community. His favorite task was preparing the roping grounds for various events with his much-loved tractor.
Cal was best known for his gift of gab and warm smile. He never knew a stranger and often caught up with his familiar friends at the local post office.
Cal was a huge fan of the Fresno State Bulldogs and also loved to attend as his kids’ and grandkids’ sports games.
In this last year, Cal was fortunate to be able to visit his good friends, the Blaszaks, in Alaska. A bonus of this trip was a flight in a floatplane, just a few feet above the glaciers.
Cal was preceded in death by his mother, Edna; his father, James; mother-in-law Hada; and grandson Phillip.
Cal is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jill, of Three Rivers; his sons, Ron of Portland, Ore., Craig of Newburg, Ore., Tyler and wife Teddi of Three Rivers, Clinton of Visalia, Tod and wife Joyce of Three Rivers; and grandchildren Evan, Ryan, Meg, Jesse, Beth, Nick, and Jake; half-sister
Cheryl Hall of Alberta, Canada; and half-brother Bob Johnson of Calgary, Canada.
