Covered California announced this week that the open enrollment deadline for the state’s residents to purchase health insurance for 2015 has been extended to Thursday, April 30. The reason for this is to provide the opportunity to eligible consumers who did not know or understand there was a tax penalty for being uninsured to apply for health insurance coverage.
Those applying within this extended period must attest that they did not realize there was a tax penalty. Consumers who can afford insurance but choose not to buy it will be subject to a $325 fee per adult in a household or two percent of their income, whichever is greater.
For the first time, consumers who are filing taxes for 2014 may pay a penalty if they did not have health insurance coverage. The penalty for going without insurance in 2015 will increase significantly.
