Darrell Rich: 1945 ~ 2019

Darrell Rich and his son and favorite hiking partner, Darren, during a 2018 hike in Sequoia National Park. Darrell and Darren have been hiking the Sierra together since Darren could walk.

Darrell LeRoy Rich of Three Rivers died Wednesday, June 19, 2019, in Exeter, Calif. He was 74.
A funeral service is scheduled for Saturday, July 6, 4 p.m., at Visalia Seventh-day Adventist Church, 1310 S. Woodland St,, Visalia, Calif. Pastor Gary Brady of the Visalia Seventh-day Adventist Church will be officiating. Arrangements are being handled by Smith’s Family Chapel of Exeter.
Darrell was born in Glendale, Calif., on January 19, 1945, to Vivienne Mountain Rich and Leon LeRoy Rich. He attended Glendale Union Academy (now Glendale Adventist Academy), where he completed grades one through eight. He graduated from high school at Newbury Park Academy where he met Suzanne Pierpoint.
Darrell and Suzanne continued to Pacific Union College, where Darrell studied for 2½ years before he began attending Loma Linda University’s School of Dentistry. They were married July 30, 1967, in Oxnard, Calif.
Darrell worked as a dentist for 49 years in Three Rivers and Exeter. The last 16 years he shared a joint practice with his son, Darren Rich. He enjoyed baseball, biking, hiking, cross-country skiing, 4-wheeling, gardening — anything active always called to him! Attending his children’s, and more recently his grandchildren’s, programs and sports events was very important to Darrell. The hours to get there did not concern him!

Darrell was preceded in death by his father, Leon LeRoy Rich, in 2008. His mother, Vivienne Mountain Rich, died Monday, July 1, 2019, just 12 days after her son.

So sad to hear about Darrell’s passing. When I lived in Three Rivers (1977-87), Darrell convinced me to come in for a check-up after many years not seeing a dentist. As I sat down in his chair, he asked why I hadn’t seen a dentist recently. I confided that I had a low threshold for pain. He comforted me and said many of his patients have a low threshold for pain. As he place the napkin around my neck I SCREAMED (as a joke, of course). He laughed like hell! We laughed about that day for many years. I never miss an appointment because of him! Miss ya, Darrell!

A stalwart of the community, Darrell will be remembered and loved for many years to come. I never once saw him behave in a manner that was less than honorable. We have lost a true friend.
Our condolences to a great family.
