Former 3R resident appointed to Superior Court

Michael B. Sheltzer, 57, of Visalia was appointed by Governor Jerry Brown to fill the vacancy on the Tulare County Superior Court created by the retirement of Judge Glade F. Roper.

Michael and his wife, Sharon, resided in Three Rivers for more than a decade (from 1990 to about 2003), and their sons attended Three Rivers School. They still own a home here.

Michael has served as the public defender at the Tulare County Public Defender’s Office since 2002, where he has held multiple other positions since 1990, including assistant public defender, supervising attorney, and deputy public defender.

Since 2004, he has also been an adjunct professor at the San Joaquin College of Law in Clovis. From 1988 to 1990, Michael served as deputy public defender at the San Francisco Public Defender’s Office.

He earned his Juris Doctor degree from Golden Gate University School of Law (San Francisco) and Bachelor of Arts degree from Tulane University (New Orleans).

Michael joins three other Tulare County Superior Court judges with Three Rivers ties. Lloyd Hicks, Kathy (Thorn) Montejano, and David Mathias were all raised in Three Rivers.
