Gary Lynn Shadrick, a former resident of Three Rivers and longtime business owner, died Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2017. He was 71.
A service will be held Sunday, Jan. 22, at 1:30 p.m., at the Miller Memorial Chapel, 134 Cypress, in Woodlake.
Gary was born March 28, 1945, in Visalia to Lafe and Nellie Shadrick. He had two older siblings, Eunice (Atherton) and Donny Shadrick.
Gary was raised in Woodlake and graduated from Woodlake High School in 1963. By 1964, he was a cosmetologist and worked in a Woodlake salon for the first three years of his career.
When Gary heard that Lidabelle Wylie (1915-2005) of Three Rivers was closing her shop, which was located in the present-day office of The Kaweah Commonwealth, he saw an opportunity to expand his business.
He opened Shadrick’s Hair Salon in Three Rivers in October 1967 and worked continuously in the community since then. This year would have marked his 50th year in Three Rivers.
“When I first came to Three Rivers, the only people I knew were women,” said Gary in his Neighbor Profile, published in the Commonwealth in 2013. “I started playing golf and I met their husbands too!”
Gary enjoyed golfing almost as much as he loved his job. His favorite course was Spyglass Hill in Pebble Beach, but after Three Rivers Golf Course closed, most of his games were played at Valley Oaks in Visalia.
Gary served in the Marine Corps Reserves from 1965 to 1971. He resided in Three Rivers for 14 years before moving to Visalia in 1982. In 1988, he married the former Shaunah Hettinger.
Gary was preceded in death by his brother Donny Shadrick.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Shaunah Shadrick of Visalia; daughter Lindsay Moore and husband Jim and their two sons, Ean Moore and Ben Moore, all of Seattle; son Cooper Shadrick and his three sons, Leif, Liam, and Logan Shadrick, all of Visalia; sister Eunice Atherton of Visalia; nephews Richard Atherton of Exeter, Randy Atherton of San Carlos, Calif., and Kyle Shadrick of Yorba Linda; niece Stacey Barass of Southern California; and several great-nephews and great-nieces.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Gary’s memory to Sequoia Regional Cancer Center (4945 W. Cypress Ave., Visalia, CA 93277).
