Girls soccer advanced to CIF playoffs; Tiger MVPs named


Woodlake High School's Varsity Girls’ Soccer (9-8-2 overall; 5-3-2 in league) advanced to the Valley Sectional Playoffs (Division 5) as the No. 8 seed and defeated No. 9 seeded Kern Valley 2-1 at home. They were eliminated in the second round by the Fowler Redcats, the No. 1 seed. 

Team MVP: Brianna Romero, senior sweeper. Hannah Sherwood, freshman goalie, chipped in with 110 saves. Brianna Romero, Diane DeLeon (senior), and Joana Guerra (sophomore), were all named to First Team All-League. 

“Brianna can play any position and she played great for us all year,” said Jackie Davidson, girls soccer coach.

Varsity Boys’ Soccer— Overall record 8-13-1; league record 4-6. Team MVP: Jared Rodriguez (senior). Team Captains: Jaime Cendejas, Bladimir Sanchez, Ramón ReyesMost Improved: Rubén Chávez. Coach’s Award: Bryan Ortega. Most Inspirational: Bladimir Sánchez.

Varsity Girls’ Basketball— Overall record 3-21; league record 1-9. Team MVP: Gabby Diaz (senior).

Varsity Boys’ Basketball— Overall record 2-20; league record 1-9. Team MVPJacob Varela (junior) 

Varsity Wrestling— Four wrestlers Nate Rodriguez (sophomore), Ricardo Cuevas (senior), Ricardo Rosales (senior), and Alex Zamora (senior) qualified for the Section’s Divisional Meet. 

Team MVP: Nate Rodriguez.

“Sometimes a losing season happens in high school sports, especially at the small schools where the teams must share players,” said Raul Quintero, Woodlake High’s athletic director. “Those winning seasons go in cycles and every so often a team comes along that wins a League or Valley championship.”
