Helen Kunkel: 1928 ~ 2015


Helen Marjorie Kunkel, a longtime resident of Lemon Cove, died Monday, Jan. 5, 2015, at Linwood Meadows Care Center in Visalia. She was 86.

Helen was born April 1, 1928, in Halfway, Mo., to William and Edith Fisher. She was raised on the family’s small farm.

She moved to California where she met and married Howard Kunkel. Helen and Howard served as volunteer ski patrol at the Wolverton Ski Area in Sequoia National Park. She also worked at Cobble Lodge, which was located in what is now the basin of Lake Kaweah. Later, she enjoyed spending time with family and friends on her houseboat at Lake Kaweah.

Helen is survived by her two children, son Gary Kunkel and wife Mary Lou of Visalia, and daughter Cheri Lane of Visalia; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A graveside service was held Friday, Jan. 9, at Exeter Cemetery.
