Lightning storms in the Sierra during mid-August ignited a fire in a remote area of Sequoia National Park. By August 19, the fire had expanded to 13 acres.
The fire is located along the Kern Canyon trail, just south of where Big Arroyo Creek flows into the Kern River. Firefighters worked to contain the fire by burning out fuels to natural boundaries, such as rock outcrops, that will limit the fire’s spread.
The Kern Trail remains open. Fire staff will provide escorts through the area to backpackers and stock travelers as necessary.
