Margaret Jones: 1922 ~ 2016

Margaret Jones, a former resident of Three Rivers, died Sunday, April 24, 2016, at her residence in Visalia. She was 93.

Margaret was born May 21, 1922, in Katonah, N.Y., the middle child and only daughter of John and Dorette Busch.

From the moment she entered first grade she wanted to be a teacher. And as she grew up, she proved to be musically talented, playing piano, organ, trumpet, and trombone in both church and school band and orchestra settings.

Not surprisingly, when she entered Barnard College at Columbia University in 1940, she majored in music. After three years at Bard, Margaret transferred across the street to the Teachers College division where she received a BS degree in Elementary Education.

Margaret’s teaching career began in Malverne, N.Y., near Long Island. She taught there for three years until she secured a teaching position in California.

Joining three other teaching friends, she had a memorable motor trip across the country, stopping along the way at famous points of interest. After a year of teaching in Bellflower, Margaret accepted a position in Long Beach where she spent the major part of her career in education.

Summer visits to relatives in New York State were combined with continued coursework at Columbia where she received her MA in 1951. From 1953 to 1984, she served as an elementary school principal at four Long Beach schools — Willard, Addams, Monroe, and Birney. During a sabbatical leave (1957-1958), Stanford University employed her to supervise an experimental program for beginning teachers while she did some advanced course work.

In 1959, Margaret married Robert Jones, also an educator in the Long Beach area. They enjoyed traveling together during the school vacations.

In 1980, the couple retired and soon moved to Three Rivers. They loved their country life of hiking and gardening that was enhanced by the friendships they made and their community involvement.

Margaret especially enjoyed her volunteer work at Community Presbyterian Church where she served as elder, deacon, choir member, and coordinator of the Presbyterian Women.

In 2006, the couple moved to the Quail Park retirement community in Visalia. In 2012,  they celebrated 53 years of marriage.

Margaret was predeceased by her husband, Bob (1922-2012), and her two brothers.

Margaret is survived by her nieces, Terry, Debbie, and Peggy;  nephew Jeff; and her longtime friend who offered care and support, Jacque Randolph, also a former resident of Three Rivers now living in Visalia.

At Margaret’s request there will be no service. Anyone wishing to remember her with a gift may contribute to Community Presbyterian Church (P.O. Box 685, Three Rivers, CA  93271).
