Oak broke

A mature oak snapped at its main trunk and fell onto North Fork Drive this past weekend about 4.5 miles from Highway 198. Although blue oaks are endemic and adapted to drought and dry climates, they are struggling during three years of below-normal precipitation.

When the trees become weighted down with moisture, branches could break or a rotted trunk system could be compromised. Blue oaks will sometimes shed their leaves during severely hot, dry years and go dormant.
