It’s not quite as popular as Black Friday but it’s a lot better for your health and also supports kids with Type 1 diabetes. Proceeds from the fifth Kaweah Country Run will again be donated to the Chris Dudley Foundation (www.chrisdudley.org)

This year’s 10K run/5K run/walk races begin and end at Slick Rock Recreation Area at scenic Lake Kaweah. Festivities begin at 7 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 28, with 10K runners toeing the starting line at 8 a.m.

The 5K Run/Walk will start at 9:30 a.m.; awards and raffle are set to begin at 10:45 a.m.

Runners are also invited to participate in both the 10K and 5K events. Special awards will be given to all runners in the double event.

There is a lot that is new since the inaugural Kaweah Country Run in 2010. That year, the event was in October on a way-too-dusty course.

In 2011, the event was moved to the four-day Thanksgiving weekend and now looks like it’s ready to explode in popularity. New this year is a partnership with Visalia Runners, a nonprofit group that is an institution for local runners and has been advocating health and fitness in Tulare County since 1979.

Race-day registration is available for all events but the hot new tech shirts can only be guaranteed on race day to those who are pre-registered. If the shirt inventory runs out, late sign-ups will receive a shirt via the mail.

RTS Race Timing will handle the timing. There will be a large-screen video at the finish so runners will have their results instantaneously.

Videos of the race and photos of each finisher will be available to download. Individual photos of each finisher are free and included in the race package.

Race-day weather— It’s always chilly at Slick Rock in the mornings till the sun comes over the hill, so dress in layers. Temperatures in the 40s and 50s are predicted — ideal conditions for running 6.2 miles (10K) or 3.1 miles (5K).

There will be snacks and warming fires for early-arriving runners and after the race. The recent rains have done away with the dusty drought-like conditions of the trails.

Thanks to the diligent work of Lake Kaweah park rangers, the scenic trails are in the best shape ever for a Kaweah Country Run event.

Raffle and awards— Overall winners get overnight vacation packages, distinctive leather medallions, and lots of other goodies too.

The best overall running performance gets a vacation package for two at Wuksachi Lodge in Sequoia National Park. And this year, some Nike and NBA goodies from the Chris Dudley Foundation will be added into the outstanding mix of prizes.

Age-group winners get leather medallions; all runners and walkers get goodie bags and a shot at great raffle prizes like gift cards from Brewbakers, Sierra Subs, River View, Three Rivers Mercantile, Sage Roots, and lots more.

Online registration is available now at: www.kaweahcountryrun.com. Spectators are welcome. Day-use fees are waived for all participating in the running event.

Registration is currently $35. The price increases to $40 on race day.

Bring the whole family for some healthy fun for a great cause. Everyone goes home a winner from the Kaweah Country Run.
