Robert and Marianne Smith, longtime residents of Three Rivers, both recently passed away. They were married for 63 years.
Bob, who died in June at the age of 94, began his career with the National Park Service as a seasonal ranger at Giant Forest in 1948. He book-ended his career by retiring in 1986 as chief ranger of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks.
Marianne, who passed away this month at the age of 88, was a caring friend, loving mother, exemplary hostess, weaver, knitter, and the best bakery chef.
Bob had fond memories of his years in the Park Service. His career choice was inspired by family trips to Sequoia and Yosemite as a child in the 1930s.
His 37 years with the NPS also included assignments in Yosemite, San Francisco, Santa Fe, Oregon Cave,s and Crater Lake. But Sequoia was always his favorite.
Robert and Marianne are survived by their three children, Ken in Auburn Wash., Connie in Albuquerque, N.M., and Glenn in Hong Kong; and their three grandchildren.
No services will be held.
