Sequoia/Kings firefighters monitor backcountry fires

 

With the two most dangerous months left in the 2015 fire season, NPS personnel are keeping watch on six lightning-caused fires ignited during the storms that passed through the region in the last six weeks. None are a threat to structures or   developed campgrounds and have not caused any trail closures.

These isolated blazes burning in the remote backcountry will continue to smolder until the next significant precipitation. Backcountry travelers may see some smoke when traveling in the vicinity of these fires.

Big Five (Sequoia) This fire has been burning sporadically in the Big Arroyo since it was spotted on June 17. It has charred 95 acres as it creeps along a creek and through a meadow with areas of heavy fuels.

The area received significant rainfall last week. Park personnel have installed a web cam to keep an eye on the progress of the fire.

Kanawyer (Kings Canyon) This tiny blaze .01 acre was spotted on July 3. It started in vegetation 100 yards from the park/forest boundary one-half mile south of Kanawyer Gap at 9,500’ elevation. It has a low to moderate spread potential.

Mineral (Sequoia) This is another .01 acre blaze reported July 27 burning in a foxtail pine at 11,000 feet near Mineral Peak above Crystal/Monarch lakes area of Mineral King. Low spread potential because it’s surrounded by rock outcroppings.

Arroyo (Sequoia) Another lightning caused fire that was reported on Aug. 1 burning on the south side of Big Arroyo Canyon. It’s 0.3 acres at 8,000 feet and has a low to moderate spread potential.

Mitchell (Kings Canyon) This 0.1 acre fire was also spotted on August 1. The location is north of Mitchell Peak and the back county resort operated on Mitchell Peak in the Giant Sequoia National Monument. Located at 9,500 feet this one is being monitored by aircraft.

Williams (Kings Canyon) This 0.1 acre fire is smoldering on the east side of Mitchell Peak at 9,300. It was spotted on August 2 and is also being monitored by air. It has a low potential to spread.
