Spring road openings underway in mountain areas

Where Highway 180 crosses the Kings River.

Highway 180— The road between Grant Grove and Cedar Grove in Kings Canyon National Park will open Friday, April 26, at noon. This scenic highway is closed by Cal Trans from November through the fourth Friday in April.

Spring is a picturesque time to venture down to Cedar Grove. During the 2,500 feet of descent, the views of the Kings River and the vertical canyon walls are dizzying. Once on the canyon floor, the road parallels the Kings River, which is at peak flow this time of year, until the aptly named Roads End.

Concessions in Cedar Grove will open Friday, May 10. There are lodge rooms, and a snack bar and store. The Cedar Grove Visitor Center will open Wednesday, May 22. Cedar Grove has four campgrounds, none of which will be open until late May due to hazard tree work that needs to be accomplished. Sentinel and Canyon View will be available for camping on Wednesday, May 22. Sheep Creek will open Wednesday, May 29. Moraine Campground does not yet have an opening date.

Whitney Portal Road, which provides access to the Mount Whitney Trail, is open for the 2019 season.

Whitney Portal Road— Over on the east side of the Sierra, located due west of Lone Pine, is Whitney Portal, the trailhead to Mount Whitney, the highest mountain in the contiguous 48. The trail is also provides access to the backcountry of Sequoia National Park, including the popular John Muir Trail and High Sierra Trail. The Whitney Portal Road, generally open this time of year, is scheduled to open Friday, April 26.
