TRUS teacher-intern asked to resign
At a special board meeting held Friday, Nov. 15, at 3 p.m., the Three Rivers Union School board of trustees voted unanimously to accept the resignation of Athena Saenz from her half-time position as the seventh-grade intern teacher. Saenz will continue as the school’s band teacher, a position she has held since 2008, and also fill in as a teacher’s aide.
According to a source in the credentialing office of the Tulare County Board of Education, Saenz met the qualifications for the position. Saenz said that her paperwork, to officially be enrolled in an internship program, was dependent on approval of a financial aid application and that took longer than expected.
That approval of the internship paperwork was expected to be finalized this week.
“Although there are strict guidelines as to what we can say and cannot say relative to personnel, I can say that this was a paperwork issue relative to the credentialing and contract for Athena,” Sue Sherwood, superintendent and principal, said following the board’s action.
Gail Matuskey, who retired several years ago as a teacher from Three Rivers School, replaced Saenz in her class on Monday. Matuskey will fill in as an interim teacher until another teacher is hired.
“I look forward to the opportunity to return to the classroom,” Saenz said. “The kids have a supportive community here, which was one reason for wanting to move to Three Rivers and make it [this job] happen.”
Saenz is in her sixth year as an employee of Three Rivers School. A cello player who grew up in Tulare, Saenz came to Three Rivers to kickstart the band program. She came highly recommended by Marcia Sweet, a former TRUS band teacher.
