TRUS wins titles in baseball, softball

Nobody can remember the last time it happened, but it’s been at least two decades since the Three Rivers Union School Eagles won league championships in baseball and softball in the same season. The boys’ baseball team, coached by Frank Capalare, finished undefeated with a record nine wins and no losses.

According to Coach Frank, the secret of their baseball success was the combination of a few seasoned veterans with a core of rock-solid seventh-graders. Pitching wins championships, and the Eagles had plenty, anchored by their eighth-graders.

“Eighth-graders Dillon Howell, Clayton Vincent, and Henry Hagen led the charge with their no fear, battling style of play, especially when the game outcome was on the line,” said Frank. “My congratulations to all the Eagle players on a fine season.”

Coaches who assisted Frank were Matt Miller and Edmund Pena.

The Lady Eagles finished their championship run with a record of seven wins and two losses. In addition to regular season play, the girls split home and away non-league games with Exeter; the girls and the boys both beat Woodlake at home.

The Lady Eagles were led by co-MVPs and eighth graders Callie Vincent, pitcher and shortstop, and catcher Hannah Sherwood. Three other eighth grade veteran players — Hannah Watkins, Katie Pfaff, and Nicole Hauber — played several positions lending the versatility needed to play winning softball.

The girls’ softball team was coached by Isaac Warner and assistants Katie Rose Warner, Heather Conrad, and Mickey Hirni.
