Keith Richard Johnson, 26, of Tulare, died in a single vehicle crash when his 1996 Chevrolet Tahoe struck a rock on the south side of Highway 198 and rolled over. Johnson’s vehicle came to a stop in the eastbound lane of the roadway. The crash occurred on the section of highway between Dinely Drive and the Salt Creek bridge. It was reported to CHP dispatch at 12:05 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 19.
Johnson, who was driving eastbound, was alone in the vehicle and not wearing a seat belt, according to the CHP report. He was partially ejected, suffered severe trauma, and was pronounced dead at the scene.
A CHP officer estimated Johnson’s vehicle was traveling 55 mph. For an unknown reason, the Chevy Tahoe left the narrow roadway and struck a rock outcropping. The cause of the crash was cited in the report as an unsafe turning movement.
There was no mention of evidence at the scene that Johnson was drinking or using drugs. An investigation of the accident is ongoing.
A CHP public information officer said that results of toxicology testing would be available in a few weeks.
