Two fatalities in plane crash near Mineral King; victims identified

On the morning of Saturday, September 5, 2020, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks dispatch center received a report from the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center of an overdue fixed-wing single-engine aircraft. It was said to depart from Visalia Municipal Airport on Friday, September 4, at 11 a.m. and due at Needles Airport in San Bernardino County (Mojave Desert near the California border with Nevada and Arizona) at 1 p.m. Two fatalities in plane crash
Radar tapes showed the last location of the plane to be near the upper Horse Creek drainage in a roadless area of the Mineral King wilderness (northeast of Hockett Meadow; immediately south of the Eagle Lake cirque).
The parks’ helitack team was briefed early Saturday and was able to locate the aircraft crash site by air shortly after 8 a.m. The two confirmed fatalities have been identified by the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office as 35‑year‑old Brian Christopher Nepinsky and 82‑year‑old Garry William Zinger, both of Visalia, Calif. A small fire approximately a half acre in size associated with the crash was contained by park personnel. The crash site is in the vicinity of the SQF Complex fire in an area impacted by smoke. An NTSB investigation is ongoing.

    RIP Garry Zinger. Thanks for the flight home from LAX to Visalia in 2016 after returning home from India! You inspire passionate living!
