A proud tradition at Woodlake High School is the amount of money that is awarded each spring to graduating seniors, many who are the first in their family to attend college. The communities of Woodlake and Three Rivers take pride in these presentations as well as is evidenced by the dozens of individuals and families who provide the scholarships.

On Tuesday evening, May 28, WHS held its annual Scholarships and Awards Night. At the event, more than $307,000 in scholarship funds were presented to members of the Class of 2019.

Some of these dollars are from national and other out-of-area scholarships, as well as those from colleges and universities. But most, 71 to be exact, are local scholarships, funded with local donations by community members with a commitment to make paying for college a little easier for deserving and willing students.

Local scholarships are a great way to help pay for school. Scholarship providers like to see people from their community succeed and so they often offer local scholarships available only to residents of a particular geographic region. Since the number of students who qualify is limited based on location, the chances of winning local scholarships are often greater than the odds of winning national scholarships. This can make local scholarships an attractive option for a student needing to fund their education.

All local scholarships are managed by the Woodlake High School Foundation. All seniors are urged to complete an application and go through the interview process. And rarely does a student who applied leave empty-handed. The Foundation supports all who make the effort.
