In February, 2019 when Laura Gonzalez was hired to replace the outgoing Glen Billington as assistant superintendent, she had no inkling that six months later she would be doing the job of her boss too. That turn of events occurred when Alphonso Gamino, who was hired in 2018 to replace retiring Drew Sorenson, suddenly departed his superintendent post after only one year at Woodlake.

Some school boards and staff would be discouraged knowing the fall semester was no time to find a capable replacement. The Woodlake Unified School District soon realized they needed look no further than Laura Gonzalez. Laura Gonzalez: Interim WUSD

Gonzalez, who had come to Woodlake from a county job where she had worked with several of the Woodlake schools, rose to the challenge and soon, with assistance of a super team in the district office, was doing the job of two administrators — proving once again the adage: Sometimes the best man for the job is a woman. When will the WUSD replace their departed superintendent? According to Gonzalez, the search will begin sometime in the spring of 2020. But Gonzalez, who still occupies her assistant superintendent office, may prove once again to the WUSD trustees, their search was over before it began.  Laura Gonzalez: Interim WUSD

Good interview. The one word I would use to describe Woodlake HS is “optimistic”. The new Language Arts test scores show the great progress students have made while attending Woodlake HS. Going from the bottom, literally, to the top in language arts testing says lots about current leadership and the kids who do the work!! Now to do the same in the math arena. The STEM program is a good start.
