Sequoia-Kings Canyon weekly incidents: A farewell to the busy summer season

SEQUOIA NATIONAL PARK

Lodgepole

● 9/19/2019: Emergency medical units were dispatched to Wuksachi Lodge for a 34-year-old male experiencing difficulty breathing and rapid heart rate. His heart rate was elevated and other vital signs within normal limits. Patient refused transport by ambulance.

High Sierra (Sequoia backcountry)

● 9/16/2019: A 57-year-old male activated his PLB after spending 16 hours separated from his hiking partner, while experiencing extreme fatigue and signs of associated acute mountain sickness. His vital signs were outside normal limits, and he showed signs of a possible stroke. He was evacuated from wilderness and transported by ambulance to the hospital.

KINGS CANYON NATIONAL PARK

Grant Grove

●  9/19/2019: Rangers responded to the Gant Grove Restaurant for a report of a 78-year-old male who was unable to stand. The patient was treated and released for what appeared to be an isolated knee injury.

●  9/20/2019: At 1:30 a.m., rangers were dispatched to a report of a motor vehicle accident. CHP advised that the accident was within the park just east of the Wye and injuries were unknown. The responding ranger was unable to locate the accident and around 2:30 a.m., CHP advised that the accident was found and was not within the park.

Sierra Crest (Kings Canyon backcountry)

●  9/17/2019: The park received a satellite SOS activation regarding a 21-year-old male who had been sick and unable to keep down food or fluids for two days at Marjorie Lake. Park helicopter H552 evacuated the patient.

●  Wilderness stations demobilized this week for the winter.

Revenue and Fee Management Branch

Entrance Stations:

● Fairly heavy traffic at Ash Mountain Entrance on Saturday with wait times up to 30 minutes. There are fewer personnel as temporary staff end their seasons.

Campgrounds:

●  Closed for the season as of Wednesday, Sept. 25, at noon: Dorst Creek Campground, Lodgepole Upper Loop, Crystal Springs Campground, and Canyon View large group sites.

●  The remaining Lodgepole Loops (A, B, C, D, and Log Bridge) will go on self-registration (first-come, first-served) starting Wednesday, 9/25.

Law Enforcement Services:

Dispatch

● The week of 9/16/2019-9/22/2019 there were 113 incidents that required assistance for all the parks that use the SRCC. Pinnacles NP (9), Whiskeytown Recreation Area (3), Channel Islands NP (2), Sequoia (67) and Kings Canyon (31).

Wilderness Branch

● September 21 was the last day of permit quota season. Wilderness permits are now self-issue and free of charge.
